STRING ALONG: San Jose jazz guitarist Scott Whitney figures his health should improve if he drops a few pounds. That's why he tried out for and won a spot on KPIX-TV's yearlong "Get Fit With Malou'' feature on the station's "Evening Magazine'' show. Whitney, labeling himself FatDad, already has dropped 15 pounds, which he attributes to "fear of looking like a fool on TV.'' His next on-air check is Jan. 21.
